NSC Leader Urges Royals to Focus on Ceremonial Roles, Avoid Politics

NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt, in an interview with EW, stated that the royal family should focus solely on their ceremonial duties. He emphasized that it is untenable for the prime minister to bear political responsibility if members of the royal family continue to engage in substantial work or make politically charged or socially controversial statements.
NSC Leader Pieter Omtzigt suggested that if the king or other royals wish to pursue such actions, exceptions should be made regarding the prime minister’s responsibility. According to constitutional law, the prime minister is accountable for the actions of the king, queen, prince, or princess. Consequently, the Prime Minister can be questioned about these matters in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the Dutch parliament.
NSC Leader Pieter Omtzigt’s remarks come in response to the work Princess Laurentien is doing through her foundation to support victims of the benefits scandal. Her calculations revealed a significantly higher compensation amount for the affected parents compared to the government’s estimates, leading to an unexpected additional expenditure of at least 2 billion euros for the government. Although the arrangement has been simplified, the Ministry of Finance has permitted Laurentien to continue her efforts.
Additionally, Queen Maxima faced social media criticism for her comments on a digital euro and vaccinations. As an advocate for inclusive finance for development with the United Nations, her statements stirred controversy.
Omtzigt understands the compensation arrangement but believes it is irresponsible for a royal family member to perform this duty. He criticizes former Prime Minister Mark Rutte for allowing too much leeway in such matters and emphasizes the need to discuss the roles and ministerial responsibilities of the royal family
